While I was growing up, my father had a Kodak carousel projector. At dinner parties, he would set it up and play sets of slides from his own childhood. His father was an avid photographer and he took thousands of pictures of his family as they travelled the world in the 60’s and 70’s. As I look back on my own pictures from the past, I find a similar feeling of nostalgia in them, and I think that it is why I enjoy imagery as much as I do. Every picture represents a moment that was, at some point, viewed as something important enough to preserve.
To me, films are the same way. Each shot in each scene portrays critical moments in a character’s life. Even though thecharacters may not be real, their conflicts and their problems feel important because of the imagery behind them, and we find ourselves caring about people that never even existed. It’s powerful, beautiful, funny, and enough to cause 12 year old me to fall in love with Demetra from Spy Kids 3.
When I was 17, my friends and I shot a feature length film in the mountains of Northern Colorado. It took months to shoot and even longer to edit, but looking back on the process, I couldn’t be more thankful that we did it. Every time I watch the film, I feel the same great nostalgic feeling as my father does when he looks at his slides or as I do when I look back on my own old pictures.
Now, I shoot fashion portrait photography, cpg product photography, content for Instagram Reels and TikTok, and short concert videos for Sofar Sounds. In my free time I like to develop my own film, fly fish, and spend time with my Chihuahua-Dachshund mix, Winnie.
Thanks to my cameras, I’ll always be able to hold onto those memories.
